1. Safety Guidelines

  • Never leave the embroidery machine unattended while it is running. Be alert in case thread goes off and stop the embroidering process.
    • Staff can watch the embroidery machine if you need to step away temporarily
  • The work area should only have the material being processed
    • Exceptions to items that are helping secure the material in place
  • Ensure you are using the correct threads and fabrics before embroidering begins
  • If you notice the thread goes off, pause the job immediately and notify staff

2. Preparing Your Embroidery File and Fabric

  • Design Software: For font-based designs, the embroidery machine comes with predetermined font types.
    • Here you can manipulate the font style, size, color, orientation, etc.
  • For custom designs: Use the software Inkscape in our laptop.
    • Here you will have access to an extension called Ink Stitch, which will let you create stitches. You can find free model in the website: Visit Example Website
  • Material Settings: Confirm thread color matching from both embroidery and bobbin threads. Make sure the size of your design fits with our hoops sizes. Ensure we have enough stabilizer for your project, otherwise ask staff for availability.

    3. Operating the Embroidery Machine

    • Check that the machine is clean and free of debris
    • Secure your fabric in the appropriate hoop (frame). Use stabilizer and pins to prevent any movement and tighten both frames using the indicators and screw.
    • Install the embroidery thread following the path described in the embroidery machine. Similarly the bobbin thread will be installed according to the illustrations on the machine. Use the link for illustrative steps online:Embroidery thread.
    • Manually raise the presser foot lever in the back of the machine
    • Insert the frames into the secure pins in the embroidery machine
    • Double-check settings for the thread (correct path), alignment of your fabric, embroider orientation, and color.
      • Start the job and stay nearby to monitor for any issues
        • If the thread goes off pause the process, insert the thread again using the appropriate path and steps and restart the embroidery process

    4. After Embroidering

    • Remove the frames by unlocking them and raising the lever on the back of the machine.
    • Carefully remove the pins from the stabilizer and your fabric.
    • Carefully cut the extra stabilizer from your fabric with our scissors
    • Turn off the machine, remove your thread and bobbin, and clean the area.

Reminder: If you are unsure about any step or encounter a problem, stop immediately and ask Makerspace staff for assistance
